To squat below parallel with the torso staying upright and the heels flat, the ankle joint has to bend forward (dorsiflex) a meaningful amount. How to Use a Slant Board

  • Start at a lower angle (around 20-25°) if you're new to it, and progress toward steeper angles (30-40°) as the stretch feels more comfortable — steeper angles increase stretch intensity on the calf.
  • Hold for 30-60 seconds per side, 2-3 rounds, consistent with the stretch durations studied above (benefits were seen from under 15 minutes total up to 30+ minutes across sessions).
  • Use it as squat prep, not just recovery — a few minutes on the board before squatting can immediately improve how much dorsiflexion is available for that session.
  • Pair it with squat practice at depth, not stretching alone — mobility work opens the range; movement practice teaches the body to use it under load.

Lifters chasing squat depth, anyone with a desk-bound lifestyle and stiff calves, and general lower-leg mobility work are the main use cases the evidence above speaks to directly. A meaningful share of the inclined-board research base comes from rehabilitation and post-stroke populations regaining ankle range of motion — relevant for demonstrating the mechanism works, but that's a different population than a healthy lifter working on squat depth, and results don't automatically transfer 1:1.
