The Step Data, And Where The Benefit Stops
Ten thousand steps is a marketing number. It came from a 1960s Japanese pedometer campaign, not from a trial, and the research has since produced a more useful answer.
The largest pooled analysis to date followed nearly 50,000 adults across 15 cohorts. The finding that matters is not that more steps are better β it is where more steps stop helping.
Adults in the highest quartile of daily steps had a 40β53% lower risk of death from any cause than those in the lowest. But the dose-response curve flattened: benefit kept accruing up to roughly 6,000β8,000 steps a day in adults aged 60 and over, and 8,000β10,000 in adults under 60. Beyond those points the curve was essentially flat.

The capacity and the incline are what earn it the recommendation; the Bluetooth speaker, the RGB lighting and the app are things you are paying for and will very likely stop using.
Use the return window. The first fortnight tells you whether it fits your desk height, whether the noise is tolerable on calls, and whether you actually walk on it. No specification predicts those three, and they decide the whole purchase.
The One Thing It Will Not Do
This is the part that gets left out, and it is the part that matters most if you are losing weight.
A walking pad will not protect your muscle. If you are in a calorie deficit β through diet, through a GLP-1 medication, or both β walking is not the tool that keeps lean mass on your body.
Pooling 62 randomised trials and 4,429 participants, the modalities were ranked for lean-mass preservation during calorie restriction. Moderate- and low-intensity resistance training came out on top; aerobic exercise ranked near the bottom, with high-intensity aerobic the least favourable of all. The point estimate for high-intensity aerobic was β0.67, though its confidence interval (β2.33 to 0.98) crosses zero β so read this as a consistent ranking rather than a precise effect.

Why It Works Anyway: Adherence, Not Physiology
Nothing about a motorised belt makes walking on it better than walking outside. Physiologically it is the same activity, and outside is free.
What a walking pad changes is whether the walking happens.
Walking outside depends on weather, daylight, having a route, changing clothes, and a block of time you decide to spend. Each of those is a place where the plan fails. A pad under a desk removes all of them: the activity becomes something you do during something else rather than instead of it.
That is the entire case, and it is enough. An intervention with excellent evidence that you skip is worth less than a mediocre one you do daily. The step-count data above only pays out if the steps actually happen.
Bottom line: The honest test before buying: are you failing to walk because you do not know it is good for you, or because it never fits in the day? Only the second problem is one a machine solves.
The Specification That Decides Everything
Walking pads advertise horsepower. Almost every listing quotes peak horsepower, which is measured at an instant the motor cannot hold.
The number that predicts whether the machine survives is continuous horsepower β what it sustains under load, hour after hour. A pad quoting 2.5 peak HP may deliver well under half that continuously. If the listing does not state continuous HP, assume the manufacturer had a reason not to.
The rest, in order of how often they actually bite:
- Weight capacity, with margin. A pad rated to your exact body weight is running at its limit every session. Look for meaningful headroom.
- Belt width. Narrow belts force you to watch your feet. That defeats the point if the plan is to work while walking.
- Top speed. Most cap around 4Β mph. That is fine β it is a walking pad. If you intend to run, you need a treadmill, and you should buy one instead of being disappointed by this.
- Noise under load. Quoted decibel figures are measured empty. A pad that is audible on a video call gets used once.
- Whether it rolls. If it has to be lifted rather than wheeled, it will live in one place permanently. Measure that place first.
If You Are On A GLP-1
Walking is not a compromise here. It is close to the right answer, for reasons specific to the medication.
Fatigue is common, particularly in the weeks after a dose increase β our fatigue guide covers why. High-intensity work on those days does not happen, and a plan that only works on good days is not a plan.
Hard cardio raises appetite in most people, which is usually an argument against it here β not because hunger is bad, but because eating enough protein is already the hard part. Walking barely moves it.
It does not compete with lifting for recovery. Given that resistance training is what protects lean mass, anything that eats into your capacity to lift is working against you. Walking does not.

What To Skip
- Anything sold on peak horsepower alone. If continuous HP is missing from the listing, that is the answer.
- Token inclines. A few percent adds cost and a mechanism to fail without changing the workout much. An incline is worth paying for only if it is steep enough to raise the effort meaningfully.
- Built-in screens and app subscriptions. Your phone already counts steps, and the subscription outlives your interest in it.
- Buying one to replace resistance training. The evidence above is explicit that it does not do that job.
